So it’s taking you ages…
And you’re more confused than ever.
A comprehensive self-paced course where you’ll create a book-writing blueprint that will clarify and accelerate your book writing process.
Learn how to create the foundational assets that will serve as the blueprint for writing your scholarly book, and eliminate the confusion around “how to get started”.
I’m going to teach you what academia isn’t telling you about how to write your book…even if you have to write one to keep your job.
When it comes to writing a book, you’re probably starting in one of two ways:
→ Going back to your dissertation to “revise” (without a plan for determining what’s useful from that dissertation).
→ Collecting more data and reading for an unspecified amount of time until you feel “ready” to start working on your book.
Both of these approaches keep you spinning your wheels, with no clear structure for writing your book.
If you want to successfully write an academic book — without starting over 54 times or taking 10 times longer than you planned — you need to learn how to organize your writing.
That requires you to create a sustainable structure.
It’s when you create that structure that you’ll be able to…
It’s no surprise that you think you’re the only person who doesn’t know how to write a book.
Academia isn’t known for demystifying complex processes. This is especially true if you’re a member of a minoritized group in academia. Nobody’s sitting down with you to say, “this is how you start your book.” So you’re left to guess, crowdsource marginally useful advice, or go through a painful process of trial and error.
All of that will stop once you learn the fundamentals.
The Fundamentals of Academic Book Writing is a self-paced, asynchronous course where you’ll learn how to create the foundational assets — an overview, framework, and outline — that will serve as your blueprint for writing your academic book.
I’ve designed this curriculum using the principles of adult learning, my expertise as a developmental editor, and the years I’ve spent coaching book writers on the same topics you’ll learn about in this course.
I believe that there’s always a place for coaching, but I also realize that you may not have the time, interest, or resources to work with a coach. That’s why I designed this course.
Hi! I’m Jane. I’ve worked with over 100 academic authors to help them write books that have been published with presses that include Oxford University Press, University of Chicago Press, New York University Press, Rutgers University Press, University of California Press, Princeton University Press, Duke University Press, Stanford University Press, and University of North Carolina Press.
In my coaching and teaching, I strive to demystify the writing process by giving you the answers to all the questions you’ve been afraid to ask and providing step-by-step, actionable guidance so you can stop overthinking and start writing.
You want to sit down to work on your book and know what you’re doing.
You want to stop feeling secretly jealous of the members of your writing group who are getting contracts and writing chapters while you’re still figuring out how to get started.
You want to write with a sense of purpose, rather than second-guessing every single word.
5 Modules. They’re actionable lessons that you can start implementing immediately. You won’t have to listen to overwhelming hour-long lectures that leave you with more questions than answers.
You’ll learn what you need to do to make the most out of this program and complete it in a timely manner.
Can you explain what your book’s about in a paragraph? You’ll be able to once you complete the module. You’ll learn how to entice your reader with a provocative puzzle, craft a book-worthy argument, and explain the significance of your work.
Learn how to claim your perspective and situate your work in the important scholarly conversations.
In this module, you’ll learn how to organize all your thoughts, data, and analysis into a coherent, clearly structured narrative.
Now that you know what’s going in your book, you’ll decide how and when to write it. With your book roadmap, you’ll create a realistic and easy-to-implement writing plan that will bring ease and predictability to your writing process.
Your workbook is designed to help you start writing. It includes exercises, checklists, and cheatsheets that will get you started and assess your progress.
You’ll have lifetime access to the curriculum, including updates. That means you can revisit this anytime you need a refresher, and for every book you write.
3 Group Coaching Sessions. You’ll have direct access to me and my team to get guidance for your project and ask any questions about the curriculum. You can also get coached on any thoughts that may be preventing you from getting your work done.
Now that you’ve done the work, get an expert’s eyes on it. Submit your completed overview, framework, and outline for developmental editing. You’ll receive written feedback that highlights the strengths of your writing, identifies necessary revisions, and provides suggestions for how to proceed with writing your book.
This is an optional add-on for $500. You will be required to submit your work by Monday, November 10th.
If you’d like to use a structured system to write your 2nd book, then yes. In some ways, writing the 2nd book is harder because you don’t have the benefit of a dissertation as a “rough draft.” That makes it that much more important for you to create a sustainable system to organize all of your work.
First, congratulations! If you have the above and you are pleased with your progress, you probably don’t need this course. If you have any of the above and are not pleased with your progress or have received feedback that you need a stronger argument or better structure/organization, for instance, then Fundamentals will work for you.
At this point, your focus should be on your dissertation. Don’t worry, this program will be here after you defend!
We don’t accept university funding unless your university pays with a P-card (purchasing card) and we are not required to submit any paperwork beyond a receipt.
