Welcome to Academic book Writing. Simplify it. I’m your host, Jane Joanne Jones, a writing coach and developmental editor who’s here to give you some tough love about the way you write. This podcast is for women and non-binary scholars in academia who are writing academic books, but feel as if the process is a little or a lot like a mystery. If you’re ready to trade your confusion and frustration for ease, clarity, and purpose, you’re in the right place. Let’s head into today’s episode. Welcome to Academic Book Writing simplified. I’m your host, Jane Wan Jones, sociologist turned writing coach and developmental editor who has worked with over 100 book writers in academia. In today’s episode, I’m going to reintroduce you to my podcast, explain the name, change, and tell you my mission in sharing this podcast with you. The reason I changed the name of the podcast from being eponymous with my business write Prose to Academic book writing simplified is because I really want to challenge the idea that writing a book is complicated in a mysterious way.
Is it hard? Yes. Will it push you in ways you probably haven’t been pushed before? Definitely, but much of the advice out there takes an intellectually challenging project and makes it even more convoluted. There’s also a lot of gatekeeping that rous the process and mystery, and what’s the result? You second guess and overthink every decision you make about your book. You crowdsource advice from folks who have no business telling you how to write your book. It feels like you have to go on a treasure hunt to figure out how to write your book. Instead of using proven systems and strategies in academic book writing simplified, I’m going to cut through the noise and give you actionable advice so you can stop worrying and start writing. We are going to focus on the systems and strategies that will make your writing process not only more straightforward, but also more rewarding.
I’ll also call out the harmful patterns I see that are slowing you down or creating unnecessary confusion. Be warned, there’s going to be some tough love in this podcast. Most of the episodes will be short and to the point because I believe you should be spending most of your time writing. This podcast is going to be the perfect companion to your commute or daily walk. My mission is to offer excellent advice for book writers with zero gatekeeping. There are ways you can pay to work with me, but this podcast will be your place to come to learn from me on your schedule. I hope you’ll join me and continue listening. Take care and I’ll see you in the next episode. Thank you so much for listening to today’s episode. Remember, writing an academic book is challenging, but that doesn’t mean you have to overcomplicate it. If you liked what you heard in today’s episode, please leave a review. This helps get the word out about the podcast so more people will listen and we can continue the conversation. Take care and tune in for our next episode.
